Are there such things as a Billion Dollar House? Forbes.com Say's "Not really." It is to be true that no one has actually paid for $1 billion for a house, or is likely to pay in the next 10, 15 years itleast $1 Billion for a home. Currently, according to Forbes.com, the most expensive house (see "The Most Expensive Homes In America 2002") on the market in the U.S. is approximatly $75 million. But that's not to say there aren't homes out there that could definatly exceed $1 billion, or even more.

However, there are some people that has more than a few Billion Dollars, so you might think well why dont they buy a BillionDollarHouse? Well, None of the houses that are already built and worth atleast $1 Billion will not probably be for sale any time soon.

What kind of homes are we talking about then? The houses that are national treasures, the historic residences of kings and or Presidents. Yet many of these homes have changed hands time and again through out the ages, often as a result of social upheaval and dynastic changes. When they don't, there are the problems and expenses associated with upkeep. Most of these homes impose a significant drag on the government's purse. After all, maintaining an old building, whether a castle or a cottage, requires constant, costly attention.

So why not sell them off? Many advocates for the continued governmental support of these homes argue that they generate significant tourist revenue per year. That might be the case, but the annual compound interest on a lump sum of $1 billion (which at a conservative rate of 10% would yield $100 million per year) would not only cut costs but also add significantly to that nation's bottom line.

After all, ever since the first billionaire climbed out of the primordial ooze, the world's richest people have always lived in the nicest, biggest houses. While many of them--like Bill Gates, who tops Forbes' list of the World's Richest People with a fortune estimated at $52.8 billion--choose to create their own private Xanadus, think how much easier it would be for them to buy one that's already been built.

And, even though none of the Billion Dollar Houses on our list are on the market, all Billionaires know that everything has a price.
